Prevention of trace element deficiencies in grazing ruminants: an evaluation of methods
نویسنده
چکیده
The prevention of cobalt, copper, selenium and iodine deficiencies is an important feature of stock health programmes on many New Zealand farms. Various methods of prevention involving direct supplementation to animals and topdressing pastures have been evaluated. F%otocols for the amounts administered and frequency of supplementation for Co, Cu, Se and I have been outlined.

Trace Element Supplementation of Livestock in New Zealand: Meeting the Challenges of Free-Range Grazing Systems
Managing the mineral nutrition of free-range grazing livestock can be challenging. On farms where grazing animals are infrequently yarded, there are limited opportunities to administer trace element supplements via feeds and concentrates. In New Zealand, where the majority of sheep, cattle, and deer graze pasture year round, inadequate intake of cobalt, copper, iodine and selenium is prevalent....
متن کاملReview on Properties of Selenium in Animal Nutrition
The early interest in selenium (Se) focused on its toxicity, but since 1957 it has been recognized as an essential dietary element. The diet is the major Se source and approximately 80% of dietary Se is absorbed, depending on the type of food consumed. In several regions of the world, the content of Se in diets has been estimated as insufficient. The dietary requirement for Se for most species ...

INTRODUCTION Reproductive efficiency is a major factor that affects profitability in ruminants. The reproductive process consists of the male producing viable sperm, the female exhibiting estrus and conceiving, and proper embryonic and fetal development that results in the birth of a live offspring. A number of trace minerals are important in maximizing reproductive performance. Even marginal t...
متن کاملSelenium profile in blood plasma of grazing sheep: A case study in specific ranch in Punjab, Pakistan
A survey was conducted in Southwestern, Punjab, Pakistan during two different seasons to assess the status of selenium of three different classes of grazing sheep. Blood plasma from lactating, non-lactating and male sheep were collected four times monthly in winter and summer seasons and analyzed for selenium concentration. Seasonal variations were found for plasma selenium concentration. Selen...
متن کاملTrace element analyses indicative of paleodiets in Middle Miocene mammals from the Somosaguas site (Madrid, Spain)
Trace element analysis of fossil bone and enamel constitutes a useful tool to characterize the paleoecological behavior of mammals. Up to now, most trace element studies have focused on Plio-Pleistocene fossils. Here, we show that paleodietary inferences based on trace element analyses can be also obtained from ~14Ma old Miocene mammals, in a period of time when important paleoclimatic changes ...
